What should I do before a laser hair removal session for maximum effectiveness?

Laser hair removal is the perfect method for permanent hair removal for both women and men. If you have already had a session at our salon or elsewhere, you know that shaving before laser hair removal is one of the requirements for this procedure. We will explain why it is necessary and how to properly prepare for the sessions to achieve the best results.

Why is shaving necessary before laser hair removal?

It may seem contradictory: why take this preliminary step if the goal is to remove hair using a completely different method than shaving?

There are specific reasons why we need to come to a laser hair removal session with completely shaved areas. And these reasons are crucial for the procedure’s 100% effectiveness. Let’s take a look at them.

Shaving before laser hair removal enhances the final result.

If you follow the recommendation to shave before each laser hair removal session, you will notice that hair disappearance becomes more noticeable, and the final result is much more effective. Why? The amount of energy absorbed by the laser equipment depends significantly on the hair’s length. Thus, the visible part of the hair shaft will absorb most of the energy and lose effectiveness since the laser only works when it hits the hair root (follicle). Therefore, if you don’t shave before the depilation session, the hair’s starting point will absorb more laser energy. When it reaches the follicle, its power may be insufficient, reducing the procedure’s effectiveness. But if you shave before laser hair removal, the hair root will absorb more energy.

Ultimately, the shorter the distance the light has to travel from the tip to the hair root, the greater the laser’s effectiveness.

Diodo laser technology reaches a greater depth compared to other lasers (e.g., alexandrite) without causing side effects on the epidermis.

Long hairs exposed to the laser can damage the skin. When a long hair comes into contact with the laser, it can heat up to a high temperature and burn the skin. Shaving before the depilation session helps avoid the risk of minor skin burns (and the associated unpleasant odor). To prevent such incidents, follow the recommendations provided by the laser specialist before your scheduled appointment.

Shaving the hair before the procedure saves time during the session.

You have already learned the main reasons why shaving is recommended before laser hair removal.

Well, there is another significant advantage to it: when we are prepared in advance, the duration of the procedure will be shorter, saving us time. If you don’t follow this instruction, the experienced technician who will be assisting you will have to trim or shave the hair before the procedure, significantly increasing the time spent in the treatment room.

How should you shave before laser hair removal?

The most suitable way to remove hair in the areas that will be treated with the laser is to cleanse the skin using pH-neutral soap and shave with a razor or electric shaver. We should try not to exert much effort and instead make two very gentle passes. After completing the process, apply a moisturizing cream or aloe vera. However, right before the session, the area should be free of oils, creams, and deodorants.

If you plan to remove hair from your back, it is advisable to seek assistance for shaving to avoid cuts or injuries.

It is not recommended to use hair removal creams, especially within the last 72 hours, as they can cause burns or irritation and interfere with the depilation procedure (and may also cause an allergic reaction).

Should you shave thin and sparse hair before laser hair removal?

Yes, to achieve optimal results during the session, it is necessary to shave beforehand, even if the hair in the area to be treated with the laser is already significantly weakened and thinner due to the laser’s effect.

How long before the laser procedure should you shave?

The most appropriate time for this process is 1-3 days before the scheduled appointment. This helps to avoid skin irritation, redness, or sensitivity that can cause discomfort when combined with the laser treatment. The result will be more painless and effective as the specialist can use the maximum power suitable for your skin phototype.

What other recommendations should we follow before a laser hair removal session?

In addition to the recommendation to shave beforehand, there are other guidelines you should follow before a laser hair removal procedure.

The most important ones are:

  • Do not apply numbing creams for laser hair removal, moisturizers, or similar products before the session.
  • Do not wax, tweeze, or use similar hair removal methods in the area to be treated for at least one month before the procedure.
  • Avoid taking medications on the day of the procedure.
  • Avoid sun exposure before and after the session.
  • Do not use UV rays or self-tanning products before the procedure.

Our laser technicians will explain all the steps in detail before your session. By following them, you will achieve maximum effectiveness of the procedure, and most importantly, your skin will not be harmed.
